Method update: 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene in GMS(L) method

Starting from June 15th, 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene will be added to our GMS(L) method.

What is it?

1,4-dimethylnaphthalene is a growth regulator (sprout inhibitor postharvest) that can be used on potatoes as an alternative for chlorpropham. The substance is characterized by low solubility in water and is highly volatile.

The physiological germination process is being postponed thanks to 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene. Potatoes produce this substance themselves during the growing season and 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene ensures a period of dormancy. As soon as the level of 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene falls below a certain level, the germination process is activated. By making sure the level stays above 2 ppm, germination is prevented. It also slows down the physiological aging process.

Legislation

1,4-dimethylnaphthalene is allowed in the European Union but can only be used in the Netherlands.

Regulation (EU) No 192/2014 of 27 February 2014 approving the active substance 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene, in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning the bringing on the market of plant protection products, and amending the Annex to Implementing Regulation (EU) No 540/2011.
